I have made some handy tools for grass. They all have to do
something with displaying maps:

d.area: Display a vectormap as filled polygons in one color
d.area.lu: Display a vectormap as filled polygons in rastercolors,
Tip: Rasterize the vectormap, edit the colortable
            (using d.colors, r.colors e.g.), copy the colortable
in $LOCATION/colr to another filename in the same
direcory, delete the rastermap, run the program
d.myzoom: Same as d.zoom but without annoying dialog boxes
d.pan: Shift entire region by pointing at a new region center.
d.myscale: Display a barscale with dragoption with the mouse.
(the scale itself has black and white boxes)
d.site.labels: Display sitelabels. either display of all sitelabels
or by pointing at individual sites (with drag option)
d.v.zoom: Zoom in to the bounding box of a mouse-selectable polygon
            in a vectormap.

I have put a file on moon in the incoming directory, called
ARCHIS.prgs.tar.Z, instalation is very simple, get the file from
moon, type:

   cd $GISBASE/src.alpha/display
   zcat ARCHIS.prgs.tar.Z | tar xvf -

For each program:

   cd progname/cmd
   gmake4.1

don't forget to run MAKELINKS.head

The programs do not have a manpage yet, since I only use them in
scripts. Hope you enjoy them.
I also modified d.vect, with an option to specify both color
and linewidth and made a program called d.vect.lu, with the
possibility to display LINE vectormaps in category dependant colors
and linewidth. These latter programs require modification of the
raster library and the XDRIVER (or other drivers). I will make
these programs available as soon as linewidth is a standard option
in the raster library.
