Vinismo:Wine labels and fair use

From Vinismo

Jump to: navigation, search

In Vinismo, we try not to use copyrighted content under the notion of fair use, because we want our users to redistribute our content freely, and "fair use" doesn't allow that. All our content has to be compatible with our copyleft licence.

The only exception to that rule is wine labels, because they're necessary to illustrate specific wines. There's just no other way - except in the case where their copyright holders (i.e., wineries) upload their labels on the site themselves and choose to do so under our copyleft licence.

You are encouraged to add images of wine labels when creating wine description pages, typically in the "quickbar" section - see How to create wine pages. These labels can be either downloaded from the Web or scanned from actual bottles. We could really use a bottle-shaped scanner, by the way! :)

edit Adding a fair use tag on wine labels

When you add a wine label image file, don't forget to use the "fair use" tag by typing {{fair use}} in the image description. This will add to the image description page the fair use template shown below:

Copyright Icon This work is copyrighted and unlicensed. However, it is believed that the use of this work falls within one of the following categories:
  • To illustrate the object in question.
  • Not used in a manner which could possibly deprive the copyright holder of income.
  • Placed by the editor with the intent of educating others.

Thus, it qualifies as fair use under the copyright law of United States and other countries. Any other uses of this image, on Vinismo or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement.
